As you may realise the site contains no images from this years ERC round. Despite having all the required accreditation Marshalls were briefed to fall in line with a recent RAC MSA directive to forbid the easier movement and positioning of Media on a stage. This has also been released as a future directive for all Stage Rallies under their remit in the UK. This did fly in the face of Page 19 af the ERCs own Sporting Regulations. In light of this I felt that I could not fufill my job so I withdrew and returned my tabard. Hence no photographs.
In light of this new directive I feel it will mean that I shall not attend any further UK Stage Rallies as a Media representative. As photographers we accept that the sport carries an element of danger, and although would never put myself into a obvious danger, things do happen. Thats why we sign a ‘blood sheet’ absolving any organiser from liability. Signing this and then being placed in a Spectator area deminishes our legal rights further. If an incident happens, a member of the public could claim against Public Liability Insurance, a member of the Media could not. I have followed, competed, and photographed events for the last 40 years. I accept the risks but never to the foolish lengths we may be forced into in the future. I hope to continue to cover events outside the United Kingdom in the future……..Paul McIlroy
